José Mourinho returned to Sport Lisboa e Benfica in September 2025, more than two decades after his first spell in charge in 2000.
Born in Setúbal on 26 January 1963, he never played professionally at the highest level, building his reputation instead as interpreter and assistant to Bobby Robson and Louis van Gaal at Sporting CP, Porto and Barcelona. After Benfica and União de Leiria, his breakthrough came at FC Porto (2002-2004): two Primeira Liga titles, the UEFA Cup in 2003 and the Champions League in 2004.
There followed Chelsea (2004-2007 and 2013-2015, three Premier League titles), Internazionale (2008-2010, the treble in 2010), Real Madrid (2010-2013, La Liga in 2012), Manchester United (2016-2018, Europa League), Tottenham Hotspur, Roma (Europa Conference League in 2022) and Fenerbahçe.
Appointed at the Estádio da Luz on 18 September 2025 in succession to Bruno Lage, he led Benfica through an unbeaten 2025/26 Primeira Liga campaign - 23 wins, 11 draws - that ended in third place, and to the Champions League knockout play-offs. He left in June 2026 for Real Madrid.
