Estádio da Luz — “A Catedral”
Inaugurated in 2003, the Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica — the Stadium of Light — is one of Europe’s great football cathedrals, built on the site of the original 1954 ground in Lisbon’s Benfica district.
- Hosted the 2014 and 2020 UEFA Champions League finals.
- The eagle Vítor soars over the pitch before every home match.
- Famed for one of the most intense, roaring red atmospheres in European football.
- Voted among the most beautiful stadiums in the world on its opening.
The Eagle & the Reds
- The Eagle (Águia): the club’s symbol of independence and nobility, with a live eagle, Vítor, soaring over the stadium on matchdays.
- Red & white: the iconic colours, with the Latin motto “E Pluribus Unum” — “Out of many, one”.
- The crest: features an eagle, a shield with the club colours, and a bicycle wheel reflecting its founding roots.
Giants of the game
Benfica’s golden era was led by the legendary Eusébio, the “Black Panther” and a Ballon d’Or winner, alongside coach Béla Guttmann. The club remains one of football’s great talent factories, developing stars who go on to shine across Europe.
O Clássico & the Lisbon Derby
- O Clássico: against FC Porto — the biggest fixture in Portuguese football.
- Lisbon Derby: against Sporting CP, dividing the capital.
- Together with Porto and Sporting, Benfica forms Portugal’s “Três Grandes” (Big Three).
