Description
The Estádio Cidade de Barcelos is the home of Gil Vicente F.C., built in the parish of Vila Boa just north of Barcelos at a cost of around 22 million euros. It was inaugurated on 30 May 2004 with a friendly against Uruguay's Club Nacional, which the hosts lost 2-1, replacing the cramped Adelino Ribeiro Novo ground the club had used since the 1920s.
Its record attendance came only months after opening, on 31 October 2004, when roughly 12,500 packed in to watch Gil Vicente face S.L. Benfica. A UEFA Category 3 venue, it is a modern bowl with continuous stands and a distinctive roof, and one of the better-appointed provincial grounds in the Primeira Liga.
