Roger Schmidt took charge of Benfica on 1 July 2022, arriving from PSV Eindhoven, and transformed the side at once. Benfica opened 2022-23 with thirteen straight wins across league and Champions League, their best start in thirty-nine years, and went twenty-nine matches unbeaten before losing 3-0 at Braga on 30 December. In October he won his first Classico, ending a nine-game winless run against Porto.
In Europe they became the first Portuguese club to reach the Champions League quarter-finals in consecutive seasons, thrashing Club Brugge 5-1 and Maccabi Haifa 6-1 before losing 5-3 on aggregate to Inter.
Domestically he edged Porto by two points, 87-85, for a record 38th title, becoming the first German to win the Primeira Liga, and was named Liga Portugal Manager of the Year. He added the Supertaca in August 2023.
Then 2023-24 unravelled: third in the Champions League group, out of the Europa League on penalties to Marseille, and the title lost to Sporting by ten points. After a 1-1 draw at Moreirense he was sacked on 31 August 2024.

Coaching Philosophy
Schmidt is a pressing evangelist. His teams defend high and aggressively, using man-oriented triggers and cover shadows to force turnovers in the opposition half, then attack vertically through the middle at speed.
He demands relentless intensity, immediate counter-pressing on loss of the ball and inverted wingers who overload central lanes.
