Sporting Clube Farense was founded in Faro on 1 April 1910, making it one of the few Portuguese clubs created under the monarchy. It became a Sporting CP affiliate in 1922 and took black and white stripes rather than green, reportedly because the Lisbon kit was only known locally from black-and-white photographs.

The Lions of Faro play at the Estadio de Sao Luis. Their high point was fifth place in the 1994-95 Primeira Liga and a subsequent UEFA Cup campaign.
