Grupo Desportivo de Chaves was founded on 27 September 1949 through the merger of two rival clubs in the northern town of Chaves, in Tras-os-Montes. The team plays at the Estadio Municipal Eng. Manuel Branco Teixeira, which holds around 8,400 spectators.
Nicknamed the Flavienses, Chaves have spent numerous seasons in the Primeira Liga, twice finishing fifth as their best placing, and reached the Taca de Portugal final in 2010. The club competed in Liga Portugal 2 in 2025-26.
