Marco Silva's appointment as Benfica head coach in June 2026 marked a homecoming after five seasons in England.
Born in Lisbon on 12 July 1977, he spent a 15-year playing career as a right-back, largely in the Portuguese lower divisions, finishing at Estoril, where he retired in 2011 and moved straight into coaching. He guided Estoril (2011-2014) to the Segunda Liga title in 2011/12 and on to European qualification, then won the Taça de Portugal with Sporting CP (2014/15) and the Greek championship with Olympiacos (2015/16).
In England he managed Hull City (2017), Watford (2017-2018) and Everton (2018-2019) before a five-year spell at Fulham (2021-2026), where he won the 2021/22 EFL Championship with a record 106 goals, was named Championship Manager of the Year and established the club in the Premier League.
Benfica announced his signing on 11 June 2026, following José Mourinho's departure, on a contract until 2028 with the option of a further season. At his presentation Silva called it the biggest challenge of his career.

Coaching Philosophy
Silva favours a 4-2-3-1 built on progressive passing, wide positional rotations and a compact attacking unit, defending from a mid-block.
On arrival at the Luz he spoke of building a dominant identity that connects the team to its supporters.
