Association Sportive de Monaco was founded on 23 August 1924 and is based in the Principality of Monaco, with its offices and stadium in the Fontvieille district. Although it is not a French club by geography, it has long been affiliated to the French federation and competes in Ligue 1. Home matches are played at the Stade Louis II, an unusual arena built on reclaimed land with a capacity of about 16,000.

Monaco has won eight French championships and five Coupes de France, and reached the 2004 Champions League final, where it lost to Porto after eliminating Real Madrid and Chelsea. The club has a strong reputation for developing young talent, with Thierry Henry and Kylian Mbappé among its graduates.

Playing in red and white diagonal shirts, the team has been majority owned by Dmitry Rybolovlev since 2011.
