Vitória Sport Clube was formally established on 22 September 1922 in Guimarães, the northern city regarded as the birthplace of Portugal, with roots in student football teams that merged from around 1913. The club plays at the Estádio D. Afonso Henriques, a ground of roughly 30,000 capacity that regularly draws one of the largest average attendances in the country.

Vitória has won the Taça de Portugal in 2012-13, the Supertaça in 1988 and the Taça da Liga in 2025-26, and has finished third in the Primeira Liga on four occasions. Its best European run was a quarter-final appearance in the 1986-87 UEFA Cup. Long regarded as the strongest club outside the Lisbon and Porto giants, Vitória is among the leaders in seasons spent in the Portuguese top flight and also fields teams in several other sports.
