Description
The Estádio D. Afonso Henriques is the home of Vitória Sport Clube in Guimarães, named after Portugal's first king, who was born in the city. It opened as the municipal stadium on 3 January 1965 with about 15,000 places, and was enlarged in 1991 for a world youth championship.
Between 2002 and 2003 it was almost entirely rebuilt to a design by Eduardo Guimarães at a cost of some 34 million euros, ahead of UEFA Euro 2004, where it staged two Group C matches: the goalless Italy-Denmark draw and Italy's win over Bulgaria. With a capacity around 30,000 and steep stands close to the pitch, it is one of the loudest grounds in Portugal on European nights.
