Moreirense Futebol Clube was founded on 1 November 1938 in Moreira de Cónegos, a parish within the municipality of Guimarães in northern Portugal. The club plays at the Parque de Jogos Comendador Joaquim de Almeida Freitas, a ground of roughly 6,000 capacity named after a long-serving benefactor.

Moreirense has won the second tier on several occasions, including 2001-02, 2013-14 and 2022-23, the last of these achieved with record-setting numbers. Its major honour came in 2017 with victory in the Taça da Liga, beating SC Braga in the final for the club's first significant trophy. A sixth-place finish in 2018-19 stands among its strongest league campaigns. Despite being one of the smallest towns represented in Portuguese football, the club has become a familiar Primeira Liga presence.
