Futebol Clube de Famalicão was founded on 21 August 1931 by a group of friends in Vila Nova de Famalicão, in the Braga district of northern Portugal. The club has played at the Estádio Municipal 22 de Junho since 1952; the ground seats a little over 5,000. Its first kit was green and white, later changed to blue and white in connection with an affiliation to FC Porto.

Famalicão spent four consecutive seasons in the Primeira Liga in the early 1990s before sliding down the pyramid as far as the district leagues. Investment and reorganisation led to promotion in 2019, ending a 25-year absence from the top flight, and the side made an immediate impact by challenging near the top of the table and reaching the Taça de Portugal semi-finals in 2020. The club has remained in the Primeira Liga since, with the Quantum Pacific group holding a majority stake.
