João Pedro Neves Filipe started at Ginásio de Corroios before entering Benfica's academy in 2007. He made his Benfica B debut on 23 January 2016 and was promoted to the first-team squad on 1 February 2019, but opportunities under Bruno Lage were scarce and his only goals came in the Taça da Liga during 2019/20.

He was loaned to Real Valladolid for 2020/21, scoring on debut but adding little more as the Spanish side went down, and then to Celtic in August 2021. The Scottish loan transformed his standing: he contributed 13 goals and 14 assists as Celtic won the 2021/22 Scottish Premiership.

On 1 July 2022 Celtic triggered a buyout clause of around 6.5 million pounds to sign him permanently on a five-year deal, ending his Benfica career before Roger Schmidt's first season began. Jota was later sold to Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia in 2023 and subsequently returned to Scotland with Rangers. He has been capped by Portugal at youth level.
