Diogo André Simões Pedrosa Capitão Machado was born in Lisbon on 6 March 2000 and spent fourteen years in Benfica's academy, from the junior ranks at Seixal through to the reserve team. Standing 1.89 m, he is a right-footed central defender who can also be deployed as a holding midfielder.

He established himself in Benfica B in 2021/22 with nineteen appearances and was an ever-present the following season, playing 32 matches in Liga Portugal 2 in 2022/23 and captaining the side, although he did not score and was never used by the first team.

Capitão left Benfica in June 2023 at the end of his contract. He moved to the United Arab Emirates with Al Orooba, returned to Portugal for a season with CD Mafra in Liga Portugal 2 in 2024/25, and then went back to the Emirates with Emirates Club in 2025. He was capped by Portugal at under-20 level.
