Francisco Reis Ferreira, known as Ferro, was born in Oliveira de Azeméis in the Aveiro district and joined Benfica's academy in 2011. He made his professional debut with Benfica B in 2016 and was promoted to the first team in February 2019, going on to win the 2018/19 Primeira Liga title in his first months as a senior player.

The centre back made more than 60 appearances for the club but struggled to hold down a place as Benfica invested repeatedly in the position. He was loaned to Valencia in January 2021 and to Hajduk Split in January 2022, winning the Croatian Cup in the latter spell.

Surplus to requirements under Roger Schmidt, he was loaned to SBV Vitesse of the Eredivisie on 15 July 2022 with an option to buy. The move did not work out and the loan was cut short. On 15 February 2023 Benfica sold him permanently to Hajduk Split for a fee of around €500,000, ending a twelve-year association with the club.
