Academico de Viseu Futebol Clube traces its origins to 1914, when students in Viseu founded Sport Clube Academico. The club went through several name changes before the historic entity was declared insolvent in 2006; the heritage was carried on by G.D. Farminhao, which took the current name in 2005.

Academico plays in red and white stripes at the Estadio do Fontelo and has spent most of the modern era in the second tier.
