Ballspielverein Borussia 09 Dortmund was founded on 19 December 1909 in the industrial Ruhr city of Dortmund. It plays at Signal Iduna Park, formerly the Westfalenstadion, whose capacity of more than 81,000 and famous standing terrace known as the Yellow Wall give the club the highest average attendance of any football team in the world.

Dortmund is regarded as the second most decorated club in German football, with eight national championships and five DFB-Pokal victories. It won the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1966 and the Champions League in 1997, beating Juventus in the final and going on to take the Intercontinental Cup the same year. Domestic success under Jürgen Klopp in 2011 and 2012 broke Bayern Munich's grip on the title. The club plays in the Bundesliga.
