Manchester City Football Club traces its origins to 1880, when it was founded as St. Mark's (West Gorton); it took its present name in 1894. The club is based in east Manchester and has played at the Etihad Stadium since 2003, having previously spent eight decades at Maine Road.

City won its first league title in 1937 and enjoyed a celebrated spell in the late 1960s and early 1970s under Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison, before long years in the lower divisions. A 2008 takeover by the Abu Dhabi United Group transformed the club, and under Pep Guardiola from 2016 it became the dominant force in English football, including a record 100-point Premier League season in 2018 and a continental treble in 2023 crowned by its first UEFA Champions League title. The club competes in the Premier League.
