Futebol Clube Barreirense was founded on 11 April 1911 in Barreiro and is one of the pioneers of Portuguese football. The club plays at the Campo da Verderena and competes in the Campeonato de Portugal, having spent many seasons in the top flight where it finished fourth in 1969-70. It has won six Segunda Divisão titles and its basketball section claimed two national championships and six Portuguese Cups.
