Futebol Clube de Alverca was formed on 1 September 1939 in Alverca do Ribatejo, a town in the municipality of Vila Franca de Xira just north of Lisbon. The club plays at its own ground, the Complexo Desportivo do FC Alverca, which holds a little under 7,000 spectators.

Alverca first reached the Primeira Liga in 1998 and spent several seasons in the top flight before dropping away, and the original club was wound up in 2005 amid financial problems and reconstituted the following year. A long climb back followed, marked by a celebrated Taça de Portugal win over Sporting CP in 2019 while still a third-tier side. The team took the Liga 3 title in 2023-24 and went up again a year later, returning to the Primeira Liga after more than two decades away. In 2025 Brazil international Vinícius Júnior acquired a controlling stake in the club's football company.
