Description
Perched on the Choupana hillside above Funchal, with the Atlantic laid out below it, the Estádio da Madeira is the home of Clube Desportivo Nacional. It opened on 13 February 1999 as the Estádio Engenheiro Rui Alves, named after the club president who drove the project, and Nacional marked the occasion with a 3-0 win over Amora.
After the club reached the Primeira Liga and European competition, the ground was expanded in 2007 with a new covered stand and renamed under an agreement with the regional government to promote Madeira. The wider complex, which cost around 23 million euros, includes the academy where Cristiano Ronaldo began.
