Old Trafford opened on 19 February 1910 and has been the home of Manchester United ever since. Designed by the Scottish architect Archibald Leitch, it was originally conceived for 100,000 spectators before costs forced the plan down to around 80,000. Its record attendance of 76,962 came at an FA Cup semi-final between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Grimsby Town on 25 March 1939.

German bombing in 1940 and 1941 destroyed much of the ground and United played their home matches at Maine Road until 1949 while it was rebuilt. Successive expansions of the North, East and West stands through the 1990s and 2000s took the all-seated capacity beyond 74,000, making it the largest club ground in England.

Benfica know the stadium well from the 1960s European Cup years, when Eusébio's side and Matt Busby's United were the two dominant forces in the competition either side of the 1968 final.
