Stadiums

The current San Mamés opened in September 2013 alongside, and then on top of, the site of the original 1913 ground whose nickname, La Catedral, it inherited. Its exterior is wrapped in translucent ETFE panels that can be lit in Athletic's red and white, making it a landmark on the bank of the Nervión.

It is the largest stadium in the Basque Country and hosts the Basque Country representative side as well as Athletic. The single-tier steepness behind the goals keeps the atmosphere close to the pitch despite the modern build.
