Description
Nicknamed A Pedreira, the Quarry, the municipal stadium of Braga is the home of Sporting Clube de Braga and one of the most admired pieces of sports architecture anywhere. Eduardo Souto de Moura cut it into the flank of the Monte do Castro quarry, so that one end of the pitch is closed by a sheer wall of exposed granite rather than a stand.
Only two stands were built, facing each other and linked by steel cables strung above the pitch in the manner of an Inca rope bridge. It opened on 30 December 2003 with a match against Celta Vigo, was built for UEFA Euro 2004, and contributed to Souto de Moura's 2011 Pritzker Prize.
