Description
Newcastle United's ground has stood on the same rise above the city centre since 1892, and football was played on the site from 1880. Its asymmetric shape is the result of listed buildings and a conservation area blocking expansion on two sides, so the Milburn and Leazes ends were pushed skywards instead, giving one of the steepest and most recognisable cantilever stands in Britain.
It was briefly rebranded sportsdirect.com @ St James' Park in 2009 and then the Sports Direct Arena in 2011, before Wonga bought the naming rights in 2012 and restored the traditional name; the Sports Direct signage finally went after the 2021 takeover.
