Description
Chelsea's home in Fulham, west London, and one of the oldest grounds in English football: it opened in 1877 for the London Athletic Club, and when the Mears brothers could not persuade Fulham to move in they founded Chelsea in 1905 to fill it.
Archibald Leitch's original bowl once held enormous crowds - a record 82,905 against Arsenal in 1935 - and it staged the FA Cup final from 1920 to 1922 before Wembley opened. Greyhounds, speedway and cricket all passed through.
Rebuilt in stages through the 1990s into a tight all-seater enclosed by hotels and offices, its restricted footprint now caps it near 40,000, which is why redevelopment towards 60,000 keeps being debated.
