1. FC Köln play in the Müngersdorf district in the west of Cologne, on a site that has staged football since the original Müngersdorfer Stadion opened in 1923. The present rectangular arena was rebuilt between 2002 and 2004, when energy supplier RheinEnergie took the naming rights; for FIFA and UEFA tournaments it reverts to the sponsor-free title Cologne Stadium.
Four floodlight pylons rising through the corners of the roof are its signature feature. Around 50,000 fit in for Bundesliga matches, cut to roughly 46,000 all-seated for internationals.
