Eliseu was a left-back who could also operate further forward as a left winger, and he joined Benfica in July 2014 from Málaga, where he had made more than 200 official appearances across two spells. In four seasons at the Estádio da Luz he was part of the side that won three consecutive Primeira Liga titles, adding the Taça de Portugal and Taça da Liga to his collection. A full Portugal international from 2009, he was a member of the squad that won Euro 2016 in France, playing in the group game against Hungary and the quarter-final against Poland, and he was later called up for the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup.
