Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama was founded in Rio de Janeiro on 21 August 1898 as a rowing club by members of the Portuguese community, adding football in 1915. Known as the Gigante da Colina, it wears black and white with a diagonal sash carrying the Maltese cross, and was a pioneer in fielding black and working-class players in the 1920s. Vasco has won four Brazilian championships and the 1998 Copa Libertadores, and plays at the Estádio São Januário.
