Unión Deportiva Almería was founded in 1989 as Almería Club de Fútbol and adopted its present name in 2001, playing at the Estadio de los Juegos Mediterráneos in the Andalusian city of Almería. The club won the Segunda División championship in 2021–22 to return to La Liga and has spent eight seasons in the Spanish top flight. Its best cup run came in 2010–11, when it reached the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey.
