João Tomás de Sousa Moreira Cruz was born on 26 June 2005 in Paredes, in Portugal's Porto district, to Portuguese parents, and is also listed in some sources as Tomás Moreira. He began at FC Porto's academy before the family moved to Luxembourg when he was ten, where he played for Norden 02, and he then spent three years in Germany in the youth ranks of Hannover 96.

Benfica signed him in July 2024 and assigned him the number 95. A right-footed central or attacking midfielder of 1.78 m, he made four appearances for Benfica B in the Liga Portugal 2 in 2024/25 before becoming a regular in the reserve side in 2025/26, when he played 26 league matches. He has not appeared for the first team.

He took Luxembourg citizenship in October 2024 and made his senior international debut the following day, on 15 October 2024, in a UEFA Nations League match against Belarus.
